Frosting technology from Lang creates precise raster images for minting coins

The production of a coin with a raster image requires special techniques and processes in order to mint the desired motif with precise details and shading, says Lang. The mint Magyar Pénzverő (Hungarian Mint) therefore relies on special CNC milling and laser engraving machines, such as the Pulsaris 300, for the production of its 200-forint circulation and commemorative coins. It offers functions such as frosting. This allows different shades to be created on the embossing dies - for facial structures, for example - and images to be transferred in greater detail, as Lang explains.

Frosting the embossing stamp

The Pulsaris 300 laser engraving machine is therefore used to produce and finish high-quality embossing stamps with the finest structures. In addition, the surface treatment with the rainbow effect is completed in just a few seconds, as the company emphasises. This opens up a wide range of possibilities, not only for the coin industry. When minting the 200-forint commemorative coin Petöfi, for example, the special CNC milling and laser engraving machines are also required to transfer a raster image precisely onto the coin. In this example, the coin shows the image of the Hungarian poet and national hero Sandor Petöfi, to whom it is dedicated on his 200th birthday. With the machines from Lang, the Hungarian Mint now achieves an even better surface quality in the production of the dies. They also score points in the production of clichés for security papers, injection moulding tools, laser marking and jewellery production.

Integrated milling and laser machines for various industries

The Impala-400-express milling machine is specially designed for the needs of the coin industry. The machine is equipped with modern drive and control technology and guarantees consistent high-speed machining, says Lang. Other applications include medical technology components and the production of electrodes for eroding in tool and mould making.

As a system supplier with over 35 years of experience in the coin industry, the company offers users specially developed machines, corresponding software, training, services and control systems. The machines and systems for laser processing and engraving are described by the manufacturer as integrated systems that are likely to be attractive not only for the coin industry.
